5 Books to Teach Your Toddler About Dental Health

December 17, 2024

Dad and daughter reading a book together

Toddlers are in a constant state of learning and exploration; it can be challenging to get them to slow down so you can make sure their teeth get brushed every morning and night! One thing that might help is the power of storytelling. Books can be a great aid in instilling important lessons about dental health. This blog post lists a few books that might help your little one appreciate the importance of a strong and clean smile.

1.    The Tooth Book by Dr. Seuss

Dr. Seuss books are classics — and for good reason. Colorful illustrations and clever rhymes make an easily digestible way for parents to present the importance of teeth. Even though the book is a little silly, it is an excellent starting point for teaching what teeth do and how they should be cared for.

2.    Brush, Brush, Brush! by Alicia Padron

This board book contains simple rhymes and attractive illustrations that are designed to appeal to very young minds. It is quite short, so it is great for kids who struggle to sit still. Another great thing about it is that it can make brushing feel like a fun game.

3.    Sugarbug Doug: All About Cavities, Plaque, and Teeth by Dr. Ben Magleby

If your child is a bit older (7 – 8 years old or so), Sugarbug Doug is a worthwhile read. It presents cavities and plaque as the troublemaking “Sugarbug Doug,” who is ultimately defeated by good dental habits, such as brushing and regular visits to the dentist.

4.    Going to the Dentist by Anne Civardi

If your child is nervous about visiting the dentist, this book can bolster their confidence. It provides a friendly and easy-to-understand walkthrough of what happens during a dental appointment.

5.    Melvin the Magnificent Molar by Julia Cook

Melvin is a chatty tooth who enjoys teaching children about brushing, flossing, and going to the dentist. This book is a good fit for kids 3 and up who love learning in a lighthearted way.

The magic of a good book is timeless! See how one or more of these books might change your child’s perspective on dental health.
