Ouch! Helping Kids with Sensitive Teeth
April 18, 2025

When you think of dental sensitivity, you might regard it as an adult problem. But did you know that kids can also have sensitive teeth? If your child complains that hot or cold foods make them uncomfortable, or that brushing is painful, you should not turn a deaf ear to them. They might have a dental problem that requires treatment! What can cause dental sensitivity in kids, and how can it be addressed? This blog post shares some helpful information.
Causes of Dental Sensitivity in Kids
When kids experience sensitive teeth, it may be due to:
- Cavities and decay. If your child has suboptimal oral hygiene habits, a poor diet, or naturally weak tooth enamel, they are at risk of developing cavities. When a cavity becomes deep enough, it exposes the sensitive second layer of teeth (known as the dentin) to outside stimuli, which can lead to sensitivity and discomfort.
- Enamel erosion. Kids tend to love treats that are not ideal for their oral health. Even somewhat nutritious items, such as natural juices, can be acidic and cause the enamel to weaken over time, which can lead to sensitivity.
- Loose or damaged fillings. Although dental fillings are durable, they are not invincible. They might fall out or suffer damage. In turn, this can expose the sensitive inner portion of the tooth and lead to sensitivity.
- Incoming permanent teeth. As the baby teeth fall out and permanent ones replace them, some kids experience sensitivity and soreness in their teeth and gums.
- Cracked, broken, or infected teeth. Severe dental sensitivity often indicates major damage to one or more teeth. If your child complains of extreme pain, they might be experiencing a dental emergency.
Help Your Child Find Relief
Any new or worsening sensitivity should be checked out by your child’s dentist. They might recommend one of the following:
- Improvements to oral hygiene. A thorough brushing and flossing routine can remove unwanted plaque and food particles from the mouth, thereby lowering the risk of sensitivity. If you have questions about how to keep your child’s mouth clean, ask their dentist or hygienist for tips.
- Products for sensitive teeth. Some toothpastes can actually desensitize nerves in the teeth, which can greatly reduce discomfort.
- Fluoride application. Fluoride can help to remineralize lost bits of tooth enamel and encourage the development of strong teeth.
- Restorative care. If your child has a cavity or other significant forms of damage to one or more teeth, they might need a filling, crown, or another restorative procedure.
Dental sensitivity in kids is nothing to take lightly! Take practical steps to help your child find relief.
