5 Ways to Make Oral Hygiene More Fun for Kids

When you remind your child that it is time to brush their teeth, do they start complaining? They might say that brushing is boring or simply that they do not like to do it. You cannot let the issue go, and you should avoid forcing your children to brush if possible. Instead, you can try these simple ways to make oral hygiene more fun for kids:

Let Them Choose Their Own Supplies

Kids tend to gravitate toward things that are colorful and unique; oral hygiene supplies are no exception. Take them with you to the store so they can choose their own toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. Of course, you will have to ensure that they pick items that are appropriate for their needs.

Allowing kids to choose their own oral hygiene items can give them a sense of ownership over their teeth; they might even start looking forward to using the things they picked out.

Offer Rewards

A clean and healthy mouth is its own reward, but young children may not realize that yet. They may be more motivated by other incentives. For example, you could start a sticker chart to track their brushing and flossing habits. If they brush well for seven days in a row, you could offer a small prize or privilege, like an extra hour of screen time or a trip to the local park.

Make Oral Hygiene a Family Affair

Most kids absolutely love to do things with their parents. Instead of simply monitoring your child while they brush and floss, clean your own teeth alongside them. They will learn from your example and maybe even feel proud that they are doing a “grown-up” thing with their mom or dad.

Engage Their Imagination

Some parents have found success in creating a fictional story that highlights the importance of oral hygiene. For example, you could turn plaque into a dangerous enemy that is threatening the beautiful kingdom of Toothlandia. Your child, the hero with the toothbrush, is the only hope for keeping the kingdom safe.

Teach Proper Technique

If your child doesn’t know proper brushing and flossing techniques, they might accidentally brush too hard or damage their gums with floss. Naturally, the discomfort associated with such mistakes might make oral hygiene seem like a very unpleasant chore. Teach your child to be gentle yet thorough so they can enjoy a clean and happy mouth with minimal discomfort.

If you yourself need some reminders on proper oral hygiene techniques, don’t be afraid to talk to your child’s dentist. They will be happy to give you some pointers.

Is your child somewhat reluctant to brush and floss? Try the above tips to add some fun into these daily tasks. You might be pleasantly surprised by the results!
